# Ice and snow damage

Snow weight, ice build-up and daily freeze–thaw cycles are tougher on a flat roof than rain ever is. The damage often shows only in March or April.

## What winter actually does

A flat roof holds snow where a sloped roof sheds it. Drifts pile against parapets and rooftop units. Water in the snow melts from the heat leaking from the building, runs to a cold spot, and refreezes. That can make a sheet of ice over a drain or a scupper, so the next melt has nowhere to go and the water backs up.

Seams, flashings and small pinholes take the strain. Water enters a crack at noon, freezes at night, and widens the crack. Repeat this through several cycles in a single week and a hairline fault becomes a leak.

## Typical winter damage

- **Ice blocking drains and scuppers**: Water backs up behind the ice and finds its way under flashings. See [clogged drains](https://flat-roof-repair.ca/problems/clogged-drains/).
- **Split seams and flashings**: Freeze–thaw pries open anything already weak, especially at walls and corners.
- **Heavy snow load**: Drifts add weight on older wood-framed roofs. A visible sag, a ceiling bulge or doors that suddenly stick are reasons to call a professional promptly.
- **Membrane abrasion**: Ice sliding or being chipped away scars the surface and can cut it.
- **Ponded water freezing**: Ice lifts the membrane edge around a pond and cracks the surface. See [ponding water](https://flat-roof-repair.ca/problems/ponding-water/).

## What not to do

Do not climb onto a snowy flat roof. You cannot see the drains, the skylights or the parapet edge, and a frozen membrane is slick. Do not use a shovel with a metal edge, a pick, a hammer or a heat gun on ice. They cut the membrane and the damage is hidden until the thaw. Do not use rock salt or de-icer on the roof surface, since some chemicals attack membranes.

If a ceiling is bulging or sagging, keep people out of that room and call a professional promptly. That is a structural concern, not just a leak.

## What you can safely do

- **Watch from inside and the ground**: Check ceilings and walls under the roof after a thaw. Stains that appear on warm days point to meltwater getting in.
- **Keep downspouts and outlets clear at ground level**: Snow and ice at the discharge point can block drains from below.
- **Book a professional snow removal if load is a concern**: Ask whether they are comfortable on your roof type. Hand removal with a plastic shovel, leaving a layer on the membrane, is standard.
- **Take photos**: Document any damage and keep the dates for your records.

## Spring recovery checklist

- **Inspect after the thaw**: Once the roof is clear, look at drains, seams, flashings and low spots for winter damage. A spring [inspection](https://flat-roof-repair.ca/services/flat-roof-inspection/) catches things early.
- **Repair split seams and flashings**: Open edges and failed terminations are repaired in the first dry weather. See [flashing and seam repair](https://flat-roof-repair.ca/services/flashing-and-seam-repair/).
- **Fix the drainage**: If ice blocked the roof, find out why: undersized drain, no overflow or a low spot.
- **Plan the bigger work**: Repeated winter leaks in the same place are a reason to compare repair and replacement.

## Ice and snow questions

**How much snow is too much for a flat roof?**

It depends on the structure and the age of the roof. Look for signs: sagging, creaking, sticking doors or new ceiling cracks. If you see them, call for advice.

**Can I pour hot water on an ice-blocked drain?**

No. It refreezes quickly and can make the ice thicker. Leave it for a professional with the right equipment.

**Why did my roof leak during a thaw, not a storm?**

Meltwater sits against flashings and seams for days. It finds gaps that rain passing quickly never reaches.
